Most people who create a desired change with hypnosis will usually have tried and failed to resolve their issue with willpower. Rather than give up however they realised that it was simply that they didn’t understand how to create the desired result themselves and that they needed help.
the underlying factor which causes the difficulty in breaking a habit with willpower is the same one that makes breaking a habit with hypnosis easy.
It’s all in the mind.
It is in the thinking, conscious mind that the faculty of willpower resides. The unconscious, non thinking mind is the home of habitual, automated behaviour. Hypnosis deals with the unconscious mind.
Trying to change a habit with willpower is hard because you are trying to think yourself out of doing something that you no longer think about doing. Using hypnosis to solve these problems is applying the right part of your mind to the problem. A habit is under the direct influence of the conscious mind.
Recognising a problem is all in the mind is the key to being able to change. Consider the following statements; It is impossible for man to fly, run at 100 miles/hour or lift a ton weight over his head. These limitations do not exist merely in the mind of an individual, they are true in the “real” world. They are facts. There is nothing that hypnosis can do that interferes with physical reality On the other hand;

I am worthless/not good enough
These problems exist only in the mind of the individual with the problem, they are not facts, they are false. Therefore hypnotherapy can be used extremely effectively, which is why in my practice in Sheffield hypnotherapy to stop smoking , lose weight or alter low self esteem have almost a 100% success rate.
Other problems that are all in the mind include phobias and depression The mind is the only place to have depression, anxiety or a phobia. This explains why, if you tell someone you’re depressed they never say “whereabouts?””

It is hard for most people to grasp why anyone would need to want change in order for hypnotherapy to be successful. Why must someone want to change when hypnosis is about making people do things things they don’t want to do?
This is not the case. Hypnosis operates through the will as opposed to over it. In order for the hypnotic suggestions to enter the unconscious mind, the client must be willing to change.
It appears that someone is being to do something in a stage show when they start to impersonate a chicken, but even in that scenario, they are not being ‘made’ to do it. The hypnotist asks “who wants to come on stage to entertain the crowd?Several people then volunteer to get up onstage. The hypnotist then hypnotises the volunteers to do what they have chosen to do – entertain the crowd.
Hypnosis can’t help someone against their will, neither can it decide things for people or make their mind up for them.
When someone chooses to change a problem that is all in the mind, hypnosis then uses the power of their mind to harness the power of their choice. Performed correctly by a well qualified therapist hypnosis can cause the process of change to run smoothly and without stress.
